Alham Wood Cheeses, Somerset
Frances Wood the cheese maker is reviving an old family tradition, her grandmother was a champion dairymaid. Building on the traditional cheese makers craft and modern facilities, the original recipes produce a distinctive range of cheeses which are rich sharp and full of flavour. All Alham Wood cheeses are made using vegetarian (plant based) rennet.
The buffalo are imported from Rumania and continue to use their Transylvanian names, as they become part of the family. The milk that comes from the buffalo is rich creamy and very white. It has significantly lower cholesterol than cows milk without compromise to its body. The cheese that is then made from the milk has these properties and is a distinct and sophisticated taste. The family have made lots of improvements to the farm and dairy over the last year or so and have opened a farm shop and visitors are welcome by appointment.
